Sweet Potato Tahini Turmeric Oatmeal

I've been feeling a bit under the weather lately - pushing too hard, saying yes to too many things and not giving enough time to myself. I recall to a time not so long ago when I came back from a four-day silent retreat feeling so grounded, centered and at peace. That was no more than three months ago. It's a bit wild to think how quickly life can sweep you off your feet. I know the signs of instability are there:

My morning meditation practice has gone out the window.

My heart is constantly pumping hard and my breath is often shallow.

I hold my breath.

My routine is a manic rush from one thing to the next thing.

I wolf my food way too quickly.

I bite my nails incessantly.

I eat my food in front of laptop, barely tasting what I am consuming.

I am constantly in noise: when there is no loud music on, I play podcasts podcasts are playing, or I on the phone voice-noting or calling friends. There is no time for silence.

I am tired.

I am sick.

And yet I keep pushing.

Why?

I fear the silence. The spaciousness. The nothingness.

For when there is nothing, who is Francesca?

Doing, doing, doing. It's how I always have been. It's how many of you are too. I know some of you out there can relate to this.

It's time to change the perception that only when we are doing, doing, doing does it mean we are worthy, useful, capable.

Of course, we need to do stuff, have goals and take action. But in the quiet space, we allow our creativity, fresh ideas to percolate. We give ourselves time for introspection, to reflect and rest. Only in rest, are we able to rejuvenate and as such feel healthy, energised and excited to achieve our goals!

So for this upcoming month of July, I will  taking the time and space to pause.

And I join you to do the same.

This sweet potato oatmeal recipe was created out of a need to wanting to feel comforted, hugged and loved. It contains warming, healing spices; is filled with tons of nutrients; is easy on the digestion; and quick to make. This bowl contains some of my favourite ingredients that leave me feeling happy, grounded and balanced (this recipe is great if you are trying to balance your hormones and get more into synch with your body by the way): sweet potato, oatmeal, tahini, ginger and turmeric.

ingredients

  • 1/2 cup oats (I used quick cooking oats - because I was in a rush (haha the irony of it all!) but feel free to use whatever you wish)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3/4 cup non-dairy milk (I used oat milk)
  • 1 small, whole, baked sweet potato, mashed with a fork
  • 1 banana, mashed
  • 1 tbsp tahini
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tsp maple syrup
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp each cardamom and nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tbsp psyllium husk (optional)

method

  1. Bring the water, milk and oats to a boil.
  2. Once boiling, bring to a simmer and add your spices (cinnamon, turmeric, cardamom and nutmeg), vanilla extract, chia seeds and psyllium husk . Stir for a few minutes.
  3. Add the mashed banana, sweet potato, tahini and ginger. Stir together and cook until the oats are soft.
  4. Climb into bed, get under the covers, give yourself a hug and eat while warm with a turmeric latte on the side.

I love you.
