Mushroom Chocolate Recipe (Vegan): Simple Homemade Medicinal Mushroom Chocolates
This is one of the simplest ways I know to bring mushrooms and cacao together: a vegan mushroom chocolate made with cacao butter, 100% raw cacao, a little maple syrup, and the medicinal mushroom powder of your choosing—lion's mane, chaga, reishi, or the magic kinds. It takes about 20 minutes to make and 15 minutes to freeze, and yields a small handful of chocolates.
The recipe is just below. Beneath it, I share why cacao and mushrooms are such stunning companions and how mushrooms have accompanied my own eating disorder recovery.
Homemade vegan mushroom chocolates made with raw cacao in an ice tray
Ingredients
1 cup cacao butter
1/3 cup 100% raw cacao
3 Tbsp maple syrup or agave
Pinch of salt
Drop or two of vanilla essence
2-3g of your chosen medicinal or magic mushroom powder (psilocybin will need to be finely grounded if they are in whole form)
Method
Finely chop 1 cup cacao butter and melt it gently in a heatproof bowl—over a double boiler or in a warm spot. Cacao butter is delicate; low and slow is the way.
Melt the 1/3 cup of 100% cacao in a double boiler (boil water in a pot and place a heatproof bowl on top). Watch that the cacao melts and doesn't burn, and ensure no water comes into contact with it.
Whisk the maple syrup or agave into the melted cacao butter. Add the pinch of salt and vanilla essence. Whisk again.
Add the melted cacao to the bowl and stir together with a wooden spoon.
Pour the chocolate into an ice tray, filling each section about halfway. Divide your mushroom powder evenly between the sections, swirling each one gently with a toothpick. Top up with the remaining chocolate.
Freeze for 10–15 minutes, then store in the fridge in a closed container. Makes 5–7 fun little chocolates.
Allow it to melt in your mouth. Soften the body. Go into the journey!
Why cacao and mushrooms belong together
I am a longtime lover of cacao medicine for its heart-opening capabilities, and mushrooms have been one of my companions in eating disorder recovery and awakening. The two plant medicines are stunning companions, whereby the cacao amplifies the mushrooms, whilst the mushrooms swim with ease along the cacao currents. Together, it is a glorious ceremony.
If you'd like to go deeper into the lineage of these medicines, I've written about the history of mushrooms (ethnomycology) and how medicinal mushrooms work in the body.
A note on consuming mindfully
Any medicinal mushroom powder is welcome in this recipe, from lion's mane to chaga to reishi. If you are working with psilocybin, please consume mindfully and responsibly: know your own body, your intention, your setting, and the legal status of these medicines where you live. This recipe is shared in the spirit of reverence, not casualness.

Mushrooms, recovery, and soul sustenance
I have been experimenting with magic mushrooms as one of my tools for my eating disorder recovery and awakening. If you'd like to understand the emerging science and hear personal anecdotes about my experiences with psychedelics, I've gathered psychedelic musings, research and treatment for eating disorder recovery in one place.
This is also work I hold with others. I offer ceremony and small 1:1 retreats on request— soul sustenance in its most literal form—as well as 1:1 coaching for eating disorder recovery and psychedelic integration and microdosing group programs.
If you recognize the gap between where you are and feeling at home in yourself, and these medicines are calling you toward that homecoming, I would love to be in the room with you. Reach out about 1:1 coaching and integration support here.
